About North Luangwa National Park (southwest of Chama)

North Luangwa National Park, located southwest of Chama in Muchinga Province, Zambia, spans an extensive area of miombo woodland and fertile river valleys along the Luangwa River. The park forms part of the greater Luangwa Valley ecosystem, one of Africa's last strongholds for wildlife conservation. Featuring rugged terrain interspersed with dense forests, floodplains, and riverine habitats, the park supports rich biodiversity including elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, buffalos, and an array of antelope species. The park also harbors endangered species such as the African wild dog and African painted dog. North Luangwa is one of Zambia's least disturbed parks due to its remote location and limited visitor access, making it a haven for authentic wilderness experiences. Visitors typically engage in guided walking safaris, which allow deeper immersion into the environment and closer encounters with wildlife than vehicle-based safaris. The park’s rugged beauty and isolation appeal to those seeking off-the-beaten-path adventure, complemented by pristine landscapes and abundant birdlife, including the rare Wattled Crane. Historically, conservation efforts have focused on protecting the area from poaching, with ongoing endeavors by Zambia's Department of National Parks and Wildlife and international partners. Visitor facilities are minimal, emphasizing low-impact tourism to preserve the park’s wilderness character. North Luangwa National Park offers a rare blend of intense wildlife encounters and wild landscapes, ideal for travelers seeking adventurous tracking, photography, and immersive nature observation.
